Träpriset/ The Wood Award

Page last reviewed/updated: 22/12/2009 11:18

Träpriset (the Wood Award) is a special prize instituted by the Swedish
Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna). Presented once every
four years, the prize is awarded for exemplary Swedish architecture that
makes use of wood and that captures the essence of our time.
Only completed, new constructions within Sweden are eligible for the
award, which aims to recognise buildings, bridges or other constructions
in which wood has been used with exceptional architectural qualities in
combination with other materials, and which employ a constructive
design or system solution which showcases the practical use and
treatment of wood. Cost-effective solutions that improve wood’s
competitiveness in the various sectors of the increasingly tough building
materials market are also recognised.

The description of the prize was changed to the following prior to the
presentation of Träpriset 1988: ”This is a prize for exemplary Swedish
architecture crafted in wood, which captures the essence of our time.
Only completed, new constructions within Sweden are eligible for the
award; for example, buildings, bridges or other constructions in which
wood has been used with exceptional architectural qualities in
combination with other materials, and which employ a constructive
design or system solution which showcases the practical use and
treatment of wood. Cost-effective solutions which improve wood’s
competitiveness in the various sectors of the increasingly tough building
materials market will also be recognised.”

Nominations for the prize are submitted to a jury, which then selects several
of these as finalists for the Träpriset award. These structures are then
published in the magazine Träinformation ahead of the jury’s final selection
of the winning structure. Träpriset is awarded once every four years in
accordance with its rules and is a special prize for exemplary Swedish
architecture crafted in wood. The next prize is to be awarded in April 2008.

A book has also been published in conjunction with the awarding of
Träpriset since 1988. This book details those structures nominated for
the award. Each respective book is entitled ”Architecture in Wood” (Arkitektur i trä).

Träpriset is registered as a trademark with the Swedish Patent and Registration Office.
