Sustainable Products Initiative - What role for fibre-based packaging?

Did you miss the livestream? Watch it here:

In 2022, the Commission will present its Sustainable Products Initiative including principles and parameters to define product sustainability. Examples are believed to be for instance durability, reusability, upgradability, reparability and recycled content. A legislative proposal on substantiating green claims is also expected, as well as a revised Packaging & Packaging Waste Directive.

In relation to fibre-based packaging, the upcoming Commission proposals raise several important questions, such as:

  • How should overarching sustainability principles and parameters be implemented to allow for product specific approaches?
  • Why is it important for the green transition that renewability/renewable content is included as a sustainability principle?
  • How could it be assured that fibre-based single-use products are regarded as important contributors to a more circular economy?
  • How much additional work is needed on the PEF method before it can be applied to substantiate green claims?
