Carbon sink
What is a carbon sink and how does it work? How can forest carbon sinks help mitigate climate change? Find the answers here.
Here, we explain the important role forests play in climate action and why active forest management is crucial for the future. Forests provide us with a renewable raw material that can replace fossil-based materials. Wood fibre is used in everything from packaging and clothing to building materials and fuels.
Forests function as carbon sinks as growing trees absorb and sequester carbon dioxide. Felled trees continue to store carbon in everything produced from their wood, such as planks, paper, cardboard, textiles and fuel. When fossil-based products and fuels – oil, coal and natural gas – are replaced with wood-based alternatives, it is called substitution.
Forests therefore have the power to provide a wide range of climate benefits. To ensure sustainable development for future generations, we need to reduce emissions by replacing fossil fuels with renewable, bio-based alternatives.
